
Prison Island – Zanzibar
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located about 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Despite its name, it was never used as a real prison for criminals.
History:
The island was originally intended to be a prison in the late 19th century during the British colonial period, but it was instead used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients.
